6 Topics Nannies and Parents Should Discuss on Their First Day Together
Whether you’re working with a regular or occasional nanny, we believe that a successful working relationship between families and nannies is based on clear communication and expectations.
One of the biggest reasons we see for nanny job failure in the first few weeks of work is a lack of communication, expectations and/or training.
To help parents and nannies start on the right foot and set them up for a successful working relationship, we’re sharing 6 topics (with corresponding guiding questions) you should go over on your first workday together.
These topics will apply to both regular and occasional nannies.
Let’s get into it!
#1 Parent-Nanny Communication Preferences
What does the day-to-day communication between the nanny and the parents look like?
Who is the main point of contact?
Will the parents be calling or texting the nanny during their workday? If so, how often?
When should the nanny contact the parents? Regularly throughout the day or during emergencies only?
Will you use a communication book?
#2 House Rules
Do parents have limits on screen time for the kids?
Are the children allowed to have spontaneous playdates or only when pre-arranged by the parents?
What toys are allowed inside the home vs outside only?
Is there a landline? Is the nanny expected to answer the phone?
How should visitors and/or service worker visits be handled?
#3 Kids’ Daily Routine
What is the children’s daily schedule?
What are they allowed to eat/snack on? What food/snacks are off limits?
What is their bath time and bed time routine?
What is their diaper/potty routine?
Do they have set playtime routines and play areas in the home?
What is the parents’ discipline approach?
#4 Health & Safety Protocols
Who is the point of contact in case of emergencies?
Do the children (or adults) in the home have any allergies or special needs the nanny should be aware of?
Where is the First Aid Kit?
Does the home have a security alarm code?
How do the entry keypads and/or door locks work?
Where is a spare house key?
Are there any weapons in the home?
#5 Use of Household Appliances and Equipment
What household and kitchen appliances is the Nanny allowed to use?
How does the oven work (if applicable)?
Are the children allowed to use any appliances on their own (depending on their age)?
Where is and how do you use the stroller?
#6 Driving and Transportation
Can the nanny take the children out of the home on foot? By public transit?
Will the nanny be driving the children in their own car? In the family car?
Do the children require car seats?
How will gas/mileage be handled?
